Mars Pathfinder

Landing Site Status

mpflstcm5b.gif

This image shows the MPF landing site area on Mars. The blue ellipse is the target 200x100 km landing region. The red diamond in the middle of this ellipse is the target landing site. The red ellipse to the southwest of the blue ellipse is the current navigation estimate of where the spacecraft will land if we do nothing. It is centered at 18.98 deg N, 326.17 deg E (33.83 deg W) and is 97.6 x 14.3 km in size. This is within the target zone and indicates that TCM 5B is not required. The flight team has decided NOT to execute TCM 5B unless there is some large movement in the navigation solutions in the next 2 hours. (This is very unlikely - our solutions have been "landing" on the same spot for the past 24 hours.)

It is centered at 18.97 deg N, 326.16 deg E (33.84 deg W) and is 98.3x18.6 km in size. This is within the target zone and indicates that TCM 5A is not required. The flight team has decided to keep open the option of doing TCM 5B later in the evening because of some small concern over the terrain in a small area of the red ellipse. The TCM 5B decision will be made around 2:15 AM PDT.
